Mayo rugby clubs to start hunt for Connacht Junior Cup

Rugby fans in Mayo are in for some exciting action this weekend. The first round of the Connacht Junior Cup kicks off with intriguing match-ups:

It all starts on Saturday evening at 7pm in Heffernan Park. Ballina take on Corinthians 2nds. At the same time, Ballyhaunis will face Monivea away. This game was actually due to be played last weekend but was rescheduled because of severe weather conditions.

For many the highlight will be the Mayo derby on Sunday: Westport host Ballinrobe in Carrowholly at 2pm. It should be a closely fought encounter, as both teams are fighting for the top spot in the Connacht Junior 1B League, and Ballinrobe travel to Carrowholly with a streak of five wins in a row.

And there is more: Castlebar travel to Dunmore. A difficult task for the team managed by Alan Bane. But in their Connacht Junior 1A League clash, Castlebar managed to beat Dunmore 20-14 last December.

All fixtures:

CONNACHT JUNIOR CUP - ROUND 1

SATURDAY, JANUARY 11

Ballina v Corinthians 2nds, 7pm

Monivea v Ballyhaunis, 7pm

SUNDAY, JANUARY 12

Westport v Ballinrobe, 2pm

Dunmore v Castlebar, 2pm
