Redevelopment plans granted for rural west Mayo school

The plans will look to upgrade parts of the school with extension and refurbishment works.
Mayo County Council has granted planning permission for the redevelopment of St Paul’s National School in Islandeady, west Mayo.
The school’s Board of Management submitted its planning application in May, seeking permission for a range of refurbishment and extension works.
The approved development includes the removal and alteration of parts of the existing school building, together with the construction of a new single-storey extension. A new entrance portal and an on-site wastewater treatment system will also be installed.
External works will include improvements to the school’s drop-off area, the widening of the existing vehicular entrance onto the R309, and the provision of additional parking spaces and play areas.
Planning permission was granted subject to five conditions, including that the development be carried out in accordance with the approved plans. The conditions also require quality audits and road safety audits to be completed at the appropriate stages of the project.
St. Paul’s National School is a co-educational Catholic primary school located in Cloggernagh, Islandeady, between Castlebar and Westport. The DEIS school facilitates around 90 pupils and is led by principal Donna Cafferkey. It also provides specialised classrooms and support facilities.
