Island kings crowned


Kevin Rowley and Michael Murphy claimed the title of King of the Islands on the August Bank Holiday weekend, after winning the last race in a league organised by Mayo Sailing Club. The league started with a race to Leenane on the May Bank Holiday weekend, followed by a race around Clare Island, Inishturk and Inishbofin on Clew Bay over the course of the season. Sixteen boats and a bout 50 sailors from around the county took part in the event.
The 2012 Round Inishturk Race was held on Saturday, July 28. Seven boats made it to the island, and five took part in the race. Privateer, helmed by Eoghan Cunningham, took advantage of an excellent start and held on to win the race. Second was Freebird with Duncan Sclaire and Kieran Wynne, and third was Rub-a-dub-dub with Kevin Rowley and Michael Murphy. As Lathair finished in fourth, and Xena was fifth. Afterwards, everybody headed to the Community Centre for food and a great night of music and dancing.
The Inisboffin race took place in favourable conditions. After the race, the outright winners of the event were Kevin Rowley and Michael Murphy on Rub-a-Dub-Dub, with Rory Casey, club commodore, in second place on As LΡthair and Duncan Sclaire and Kieran Wynne third on Freebird.
