The project previously received significant funding under the Town Centre First Scheme in August 2024.

Mayo County Council has granted planning permission for the redevelopment of the former Tower Bar in Killala into a new community hub featuring a range of public facilities.

Killala Community Council submitted plans for the project in October 2025, seeking permission to change the use of the Market Street premises from a licensed premises to a community building.

The approved development will include a library, training facilities, retail space and a multi-purpose community area. Significant alterations to the existing structure are also planned, including the demolition of the current ground floor.

Planning permission was granted subject to seven conditions.

Among the conditions imposed are requirements for archaeological monitoring throughout the works by a suitably qualified archaeologist, along with the submission of a report detailing the findings. Construction activity will be restricted to between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm from Monday to Friday, and between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm on Saturdays.

The project previously received €49,875 under the Town Centre First Scheme in August 2024 to support the planning and development of the former Tower Bar as a multi-functional community hub.

Speaking at the time of the funding announcement, Cllr Jarlath Munnelly said that ‘Killala has been crying out for a state-of-the-art visitor experience for years.’
