Mayo pool player Danny Feehan didn't get the easiest singles match-up for his first singles appearance at the European Championship.

The Westport man qualified for the Irish team at this year's continental competition in Cyprus and apart from participating in the team's competition, Feehan also got to start in the singles event.

He could have been pitted against so many options, but of all players he as drawn to face the current number one in the World, Tom Cousins.

Feehan missed a black to go 3-4 down against the Welshman, but missed it. The Mayo man wouldn't return to the table after that and eventually lost 2-7.

"I was happy to share a table with him," said Feehan afterwards: "Against any other player, you'd get more chances. Cousins took out some savage finishes. You just can't complain really. You've just got to cheer him on. He was actually a sound fella after the game."

Regarding Feehan's team event involvement, there's still everything to play for, after Ireland's two wins from five matches.

Feehan and his teammates have to beat Belgium and Scotland in the last group games to qualify for the knockouts, which is on tomorrow evening.
