As Mayo intermediate club football champions Crossmolina Deel Rovers bid for a national title this weekend, one of the town's own earned a fantastic achievement over the weekend.

Rionagh McHale, representing Ballina Rowing Club, secured third place in the 1,000m Freshman event at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships.

It was her personal best, seven seconds faster than her previous time at the provincials last November.

Rionagh competed at the University of Limerick Sports Arena, against athletes from many other rowing clubs and universities across the country.

She is a student of Gortnor Abbey in Crossmolina. Ballina Rowing Club are delighted with Rionagh's success, in just her first year of rowing.
