Mayo athlete Derek Sheridan has completed an extraordinary journey: "5 years of work to get here" wrote the 46-year-old on his Instagram account.
"9 Ironman, 1,200km of swimming, 55,000km of cycling and 10,000km of running. 3,000 hours of training to get to this finish line."
That was how Derek described his feelings after finishing the Ironman Hawaii last weekend. His time was 10 hours 24 minutes and 18 seconds.
Unfortunately no family were able to fly out to be with him. Everyone tracked him at home until the wee hours, said his sister Jennifer Sheridan, speaking to The Mayo News.
The Ironman Hawaii in Kona is the pinnacle event in triathlon sport. Derek qualified after winning his age group in Cork Ironman last year in August 2023.
He was planning on that being the last time he did Ironman Kona, however he was disappointed at not completing it in under 10 hours so he is going to give it another shake in 2026.
As Derek wrote on Instagram: "I thought I was done, I am not, I'll take a break and do some fitness for fun. Then, I'll be back here looking for the time I left on course on Saturday."
