Castlebar based Mayo Meteors lost their National Cup game 61-67 against UCD Marian on Sunday. Due to a leak in the roof of their usual home venue DLS, their fixture on Sunday had to be moved to Tourmakeady. This change on short-notice didn't deter many fans who made the trip in lashing rain. The Meteors had an excellent start, leading 12-0, with pacy game-play, hitting threes. But UCD Marian slowly chipped away. “The second quarter was probably the worst quarter we've ever played as a basketball club,” player and club chairman Alex Evans admitted to The Mayo News. The Meteors only scored seven points in ten minutes. “We couldn't do anything right, turning the ball over, making really uncharacteristic mistakes, not making any easy decisions,” analysed Evans.

“We were up by five points with a handful of minutes to go. And again, we kind of slipped back into our previous mistakes, turning the ball over, and we couldn't take our chances. Credit to UCD Marian, they're a great side, full of experienced players” conceded Evans.

Best player of the game for the Meteors was Colm Hegarty who put up 14 points, bringing energy, and big post-up work which kept his team in the game especially during the third quarter.

Unfortunately for the Castlebar players, their cup season is now over before it properly began. The Meteors would like to express their special thanks to their matchday sponsor Danolla's Takeaway. The next game is currently scheduled for November 23 at home against Merry Monk Ballina.
