A number of investigations have been launched after a prisoner at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise died from a suspected drug overdose.
The Irish Prison Service has confirmed the inmate, who was aged in his 30s, died early on Easter Sunday and that investigations into the circumstances of his death are now underway.
“As with all deaths in custody, the Irish Prison Service, the Office of the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Siochana investigate where circumstances warrant."
The spokesperson added that the precise cause of death will be determined by the local Coroner.
While the investigations are at an early stage, it's understood there is nothing to suggest that the man's death is suspicious or that foul play was involved.
Arrangements will now be made to conduct a post mortem on the inmate's body and the results will determine the course of the garda investigation.
