When do the Bank Holidays fall in Ireland over New Year and in 2025?

Bank Holiday Christmas and 2025

Citizens Information have issued a detailed report on the bank holidays and public holidays over the Christmas period and in 2025.

Since February 2023 there are now 10 public holidays a year, instead of 9. The additional public holiday day was introduced for St Bridgid's Day.

The remaining public holidays of this year include:

  • New Year’s Day, Wednesday 1 January 2025

When a public holiday falls on a day that is not your ‘normal working day’, you are still entitled to benefit for that public holiday, according to Citizens Information.

The 10 public holiday days in 2025 are as follows:

  • New Year's Day (1 January)
  • First Monday in February, or 1 February if the date falls on a Friday
  • Saint Patrick's Day (17 March)
  • Easter Monday
  • First Monday in May
  • First Monday in June
  • First Monday in August
  • Last Monday in October
  • Christmas Day (25 December)
  • Saint Stephen's Day (26 December)

Good Friday is not a public holiday, according to Citizens Information, so while some schools and businesses close on that day, you have no automatic entitlement to time off work on that day.

If you qualify for public holiday benefit, you are entitled to one of the following:

  • A paid day off on the public holiday
  • An additional day of annual leave
  • An additional day's pay
  • A paid day off within a month of the public holiday
