President Michael D. Higgins and wife Sabina celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today.

The couple tied the knot on the 8th of July 1974 at St Mary's Catholic Church, on Haddington Road, in Dublin.

The official Presidential Twitter account posted :

"President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina are celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Their wedding was 50 years ago today on 8 July 1974."

Social media responded to the couple sharing their special Golden Wedding Anniversary with one user writing:

"Congrats president and Mrs Higgins on 50 years of joy and friendship. 4 children and an grandchild as well. Hope you have a lovely day together and this evening as well."

Another reads: "Congratulations on your Golden Wedding Anniversary President & Mrs Higgins and many more to come. Have a great day."

A third user writes: "Best wishes to both of you! Was wonderful to attend
President's inaugural lecture at The University of Manchester and received very encouraging correspondence regarding a book project. Infinite love and blessings!"
