AbbVie has become the latest local organisation to support a major overhaul of Westport AC’s facilities.
The long-established employer’s – formerly known as Allergan – sponsorship commitment will go towards improving wheelchair accessibility.
Over €160,000 has already been raised for the new tartan track, which will replace the existing gravel track which is not conducive to sprinting.
Several local businesses and organizations have given public support and sponsorship towards the new tartan track.
Westport AC, which has already gathered €160,000 to fund this project, is currently undergoing a major refurbishment of its facilities on Horkan’s Hill.
A new ‘rec area’ has been installed while upgrades to its toilet facilities have been completed.
Work is also ongoing to make the viewing area more wheelchair accessible. This will involve the creation of a lengthy wheelchair ramp which will allow wheelchair users to enter and exit the track comfortably and safely.
Lego blocks for the redevelopment of the access have been generously sponsored by Corcoran Concrete.
Railings will also be installed at the viewing area to minimise the risk of falls.
Local county councillors Peter Flynn, John O’Malley, Christy Hyland and Brendan Mulroy have provided funding to Westport AC from their General Municipal Allocation for different projects at the track.
Westport AC has applied for Sports Capital funding for their new tartan athletics track. The successful applicants are due to be announced in May or June.
Last year, Westport AC hosted Mayo and Connacht Cross Country Championship events at Westport House. It hopes to host the National Cross Country championships in the near future.
