THEY may have been tired and jet-lagged but Mayo ‘superfans’ Michael McDonnell and his granddaughter Chloe Corrigan from Curryane, Swinford, still made it to MacHale Park on Sunday to support the Mayo hurlers in their Nicky Rackard Cup game against Monaghan.

At the time of the throw-in in Castlebar, Michael had been 28 hours without sleep after getting up at 5am in New York on Saturday (10am here).

Michael and Chloe departed from Shannon Airport last Wednesday week to attend the Mayo v New York game in Gaelic Park and spent last week visiting his sister in Yonkers.

“We had a lovely time over there and met so many people. We arrived back in Shannon around 5am this morning (Sunday) and I drove home. We were at the 10.30am Mass in Midfield and then headed for Castlebar after 1pm,” said Michael.

“It is such a pity that some more of the thousands of Mayo followers who made the journey to New York and who will be over in Roscommon next Sunday don’t try and lend a bit of support to the hurlers. They are a great bunch of lads and put in a huge effort. It was good to be back in time for this game.”
