The main man: Liam Lavin. The forward is playing the hurling of his life. He delivered another top class performance on this occasion scoring six points from play and making huge overall contribution.
Brian Finn from Claremorris, who is joint manager of the Mayo team along with Ray Larkin, said they were very pleased with how things turned out on Sunday. “We were slow to settle but from once we hit the front midway through the first half, things began to fall into place.
“When the right kind of ball began to go into the forwards, they made excellent use of it. Liam Lavin picked off some stunning scores. We managed some great scores throughout the game and missed some as well but you will always have that. The Louth goalkeeper pulled off some terrific saves.
“We gave a first team start to Matthew Connor at full forward and the game also enables us to give debut league starts to Diarmuid Phillips from Ballyhaunis and Brendan Sheridan from the Moytura club. We also got some game time for Shane (Boland) in the closing minutes after his few weeks over in Australia. He picked off a fine point so it is great to have him back now,” said Finn.
Mayo will take on Sligo in the final round of the league series at Kent Park in Sligo (home of St Mary’s GAA Club) on Saturday at 1pm. A win or draw will see Mayo go straight through to the final of Division 3A.
