OSCAR TRAYNOR CUP SEMI-FINAL

Mayo 4-2 Kerry

Umbro Milebush Park

Mayo marched to the semi-final of the Oscar Traynor Cup, with an emphatic 4-2 win over Kerry in Umbro Milebush Park on Sunday afternoon. This was an exciting contest played between two committed sides, and was Mayo’s best performance in the competition this year, to date.

Mayo had the perfect start, when Ben Edeh finished a well-worked move from a corner, to put the hosts in front in the first minute. With injuries to four central-strikers, Edeh, lined out in the centre for Joe Kelly’s side and tortured the Kerry defence in the first half.

Kerry remained composed despite the early concession, and equalised on fourteen minutes when Eoin Moynihan overlapped and crossed for Matthew Horgan to level matters.

Mayo took the lead again, seven minutes later. Man-of-the-match, Ioseph O’Reilly, sent a superb diagonal pass to Jamie Cawley. The Ballina man found Edeh in the centre, and the big Ballyheane man passed to the advancing Dylan McKee, who drove home. Kerry weren’t finished yet however and six minutes before the break, the impressive Shane Lowth shot past Gary Cunnningham in the Mayo goal.

Left back, Andrew Shally, returning to the side after injury, drove a screamer to the net from thirty-five metres, to restore Mayo’s superiority five minutes after the break. The Kerry management will be disappointed he wasn’t closed-down, but once propelled, Shally’s shot was unstoppable. Kerry tried hard to find a way through after that, but Kelly’s charges stuck to their instructions, and absorbed the pressure. Ioseph O’Reilly, gave a man-of-the-match performance at centre back alongside the impressive Cillian Redmond. Darren Brown was excellent in the middle, and Edeh distracted the Kerry defence all day.

Substitute, Jack O’Connor, put the issue beyond all doubt when Kerry ‘keeper, Kyle Clifford, advanced to the edge of the box, only to be rounded by Edeh who crossed low to the Kiltimagh/Knock man.

Mayo go into the draw for the March 10 semi-finals, while Kerry go home.
