RUGBY
CONNACHT SENIOR A SCHOOLS CUP
St Muredach's 18
Garbally 17
A lusty rendition of The Boys from the County Mayo rang out over the Moy on Friday evening as the young men of St Muredach's celebrated a famous victory over Garbally College, one of the traditional powerhouses of schools rugby.
The large crowd was kept richly entertained from first whistle to last as play swung up and down Heffernan Park, but nobody could argue with the fact that Muredach's richly deserved their win having being held up over the line on three occasions when tries looked certain.
Garbally were highly-talented and well-structured with and without the ball - and they had to be given the dynamic Muredach's attack led by the outstanding Daniel Feeney who turned in a spectacular performance in the centre. The home pack was equally impressive with Brian Donohoe outstanding at number 8 and Conor Brown particularly eye-catching in the loose.
Muredach's hit the front early when Conor Connolly got in for a try but Garbally rumbled over minutes later for Sean Power to touch down for a well-deserved score.
However, Billy Ruane and highly-impressive scrum-half Liam Masterson drove Muredach's forward time and time again and when Feeney raced in for a try in the left corner the home side were 10-5 clear at the break.
The Moysiders were much the better team for long periods of the second half and when a Luke Feeney try put them 15-5 clear it looked like the boys in red and white would cruise into the semi-final. Garbally had other ideas however and they powered forward for Shane McDermott to touch down in the corner.
That left Muredach's minding a dangerous five-point lead but when Connolly stroked over a penalty with time almost up it seemed as if the squad coached by Richard West, Cody Chilcott, Emmet Peyton and Gary Kavanagh were home and dry, leading 18-10.
However, Garbally refused to go quietly and powered forward time and time again. They were rewarded in the final play of the day when Sean Gannon got in for a well-worked try and Joseph Smyth kicked the conversion to leave just a single point between the sides when the final whistle unleashed scenes of great Ballina celebrations.
