BALLINA TOWN deservedly lifted the Calor Gas Super Cup with a late set-piece winner from Dylan McKee at Solar 21 Park in Castlebar on Sunday.
In an exciting and entertaining game, Town twice came from behind and gave a second-half display of hunger, aggression and skill to overpower a younger Westport side, who had their chances to win it.
The loss of Darren Browne, a minute after Paul Mee had restored Westport’s lead, was a very significant factor in determining the outcome of this contest.
Browne had been Westport’s most influential player operating in the advanced midfield position. His replacement, Adam Nugent, played further forward, giving more room to McKee and man of the match, Rafael Cretaro, to dictate proceedings and ultimately win it for Ballina.
Cretaro had given Ballina Town a deserved lead with an excellent goal after 11 minutes.
They had dominated the opening period. Westport settled after that and Browne equalised on 19 minutes. After the break, Mee finished Mark McDonagh’s pass to put Westport in front again.
Matthew Cowan, who replaced the injured Benny Lavelle, brought Ballina level with a quarter of the match remaining when he picked up Conor Gorman’s pass.
And Dylan McKee powered a free-kick to the Westport net to win it 11 minutes before the end.
