DESPITE having ninety percent of the possession, Westport United had to rely on a Darren Browne penalty to dispose of a stubborn Ballinrobe Town side to advance to the next round of the FAI Junior Cup.
On a small pitch with longish grass, the homeside put every man behind the ball and hoped for a counter-attack to snatch it.
Ballinrobe Town manager Pat O’Sullivan’s plan was largely successful, except that they didn’t get the break.
But they did frustrate their opponents.
Westport had plenty of chances, but couldn’t score.
Their attackers hadn’t a second on the ball, and any shot they did get on target was dealt with by Seán Shaughnessy in the Ballinrobe goal. The had a few speculative shots from distance, a lottery that paid no dividends in the Sunday afternoon sunshine of The Green.
The penalty came as a result of a handball in the 52nd minute; Browne is a long time at his craft and made no mistake from the spot.
Aaron Cannon, returning to the Westport defence, put in a man of the match performance, playing in the middle and up front as Westport battered the hosts.
Full back Jonathan Lawrence was best for Ballinrobe.
