Round 3

Davitts 0-13

LAST year’s County Junior champions Islandeady are heading into the Mayo Intermediate championship quarter-finals at the first time of asking.
Shane Hopkins’ team were deserving winners against Davitts in this winner-takes-all third round encounter in Tourmakeady on Sunday afternoon.
Goals at either end of the second half from Pat Carolan and Darragh Joyce were the key scores in their five point win over Damien Egan’s charges.
At the interval just one point separated the sides with Islandeady leading by 0-6 to 0-5.
At the end of the first quarter Islandeady led by 0-5 to 0-1 thanks to a brace of points from Levi Barrett and one each from from Zac Collins, Darragh Joyce and Brendan Gibbons.
Davitts then hit a second quarter purple patch where they outscored Islandeady by 0-4 to 0-1 with Niall Treacy kicking two points and Shane Treacy and Dylan Gallagher also getting on the scoreboard.
Just after the resumption of hostilities Islandeady plundered their first goal of the day when Pat Carolan was on hand to fire the ball home.
Zac Collins added on a quickfire score to push the lead out out to five points with 25 minutes to go.
Davitts battled back into the game with Fenton Kelly and Colm Boyle reducing the deficit to three points, but every time they looked to get a run on their opponents Islandeady hit a relieving score.
With five minutes to go there were just four points between the sides, and Davitts were pushing hard. But when Darragh Joyce palmed the ball to the net from close range after good work by Darragh O’Malley and Gibbons, there was only going to be one winner.
