Round 3
Moy Davitts 2-14
Kilmaine 2-11
TWO second half goals proved crucial in helping Mayo Intermediate title favourites Moy Davitts to get over the line against struggling Kilmaine in Mayo Abbey on Sunday.
The East Mayo men, who had already qualified for the quarter-finals, led by six points in injury time.
But Kilmaine rallied late on and a goal from Oisin Mullin set up a dramatic finale.
The underdogs from South Mayo were then handed an opportunity to snatch a draw deep in added time when they were awarded a penalty — but Jarlath Mullin’s effort was brilliantly saved by Moy Davitts goalkeeper, Chris McGlynn.
The raging hot favourites also led at half-time by 0-8 to 0-7, but they were given a huge boost just after the restart when Brian Heneghan goaled to give them breathing space.
But Kilmaine responded with a goal of their own through Hugh O'Loughlin not even a minute later.
Like the opening half the third quarter was tit-for-tat, but Moy Davitts pulled away thanks to nice scores from Heneghan and Cian McHale, before the latter capitalised on a Kilmaine defensive mix-up to score into an empty net.
It looked at that stage like Moy Davitts would coast to victory, but Kilmaine’s late rally changed that and were it not for Chris McGlynn’s heroics, Tom Flynn’s men would have left Mayo Abbey with a draw.
