A five-goal tour-de-force from Mayo Minor Bree Hession was the diamond in a jewel-encrusted Claremorris performance which saw them capture their first even Minor county title in Bekan this evening.
A stellar display from Hession and Mayo senior Alana Fitzpatrick, coupled with several other noteworthy performances, gave Claremorris firepower that Westport could not live with.
It took them just eighteen seconds for them to hit their first score through Ashleigh Salmon – who finished with four points.
That set the wheels in motion for the South Mayo girls to land two goals from Fitzpatrick and Hession in the fifth minute.
Despite boasting a number of Mayo Minors, Westport frequently got turned over by an excellent Claremorris defence and were denied goals by Molly Barrett’s brilliant goalkeeping.
Deirdre Horkan grabbed the first of her two goals after 20 minutes and the half-time score read 3-6 to 0-7.
Westport had good performances from the likes of Sarah Mulroy, Molly Williams and Larissa Kelly and persevered until the end.
However, they were ultimately sank by six second-half Claremorris goals – four from Hession, one from Horkan and one from Amy Cummins.
A full report will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
