Oisin McLaughlin kicked 1-1 for Westport on Saturday night
Westport got the better of Aghamore in the shadow of The Reek on Saturday evening to qualify for the league semi-final. The 2-11 to 0-10 scoreline was a fair reflection of the game as the county champions were the better team on the night. Aghammore were competitive throughout and looked to play good football at all times but Westport were too strong without ever hitting the high spots.
The teams were level at half time, 0-6 apiece, after Aghamore had the advantage of the stiff breeze for the opening 30 minutes. Oisin McLaughlin, Alan Kennedy and Fionn McDonagh accounted for the Westport scores while Darren Duffy, Liam Lavin, Conor Kilkenny and Fergal Boland replied for the guests.
Both sides tried hard to play good football but rarely did 30 seconds pass without a free being awarded. This led to frustration on the pitch which boiled over near the end of the half, but the interactions were more shape-throwing than anything else.
Westport utterly dominated the third quarter and added 2-2 to their tally without reply. The home side were somewhat wasteful in front of the posts but goals from both joint-captains, Niall McManamon and Oisin McLaughlin, sealed the deal and left them eight points clear before Aghamore got off the mark in the second half.
Frees from Duffy and goalkeeper Adam Byrne kept the chasers ticking over but there was no catching the county champions who were clear winners at the final whistle.
