Celebrations are breaking out in Geesala after Fiachna Barrett helped Ireland into next Friday's U-20 Rugby World Cup final. The tight-head prop came off the bench during the 31-12 win over the home side in Cape Town and played his part in a hugely impressive display by the young men in green.
South Africa had the majority of possession in the first half but a James Nicholson try converted by Sam Prendergast gave the Irish men a 7-0 lead at the interval. The home side balanced the scores early in the second half before Ireland took charge. The Six Nations champions were powerful in the tight and lethal when they released the ball to the backs.
Tries from the excellent Brian Gleeson, Nicholson and Sam Berman, all converted by Prendergast gave them a 28-7 advantage before a converted penalty stretched the lead to 24 points.
South Africa did launch a late charge but a place in next Friday's final had been well and truly secured by then and Geesala's finest was on his way to the decider.
Barrett and fellow squad member Harry West came through the ranks at Ballina RFC and there was great delight by the Moy when the final whistle sounded.
