Public consultation opens on amendments aimed at improving safety for road users in Binghamstown and Doohoma

Mayo County Council has opened a public consultation on proposed amendments to road traffic speed limits in the Blacksod Bay area as part of plans to introduce a new Quiet Roads Scheme.

The proposed changes, announced on May 26, would amend the Mayo County Council Road Traffic Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws 2018 in accordance with Section 9 of the Road Traffic Act 2004.

The proposed amendments are intended to support the implementation of the Blacksod Bay Quiet Roads Scheme by introducing more appropriate speed limits on roads within the area, improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users while encouraging calmer traffic conditions.

The proposed changes apply to roads in Binghamstown and Doohoma, where revised traffic speeds are being considered to better reflect the surrounding environment.

Members of the public can inspect the proposed amendments and make a submission until 4.30pm on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

Documents will be available at the Belmullet Civic Offices on Church Road in Belmullet and at the Mayo National Roads Office, Glenpark House, The Mall, Castlebar.

Residents and interested parties are being invited to submit observations or submissions on the proposals by post, marked “Proposed Amendments to the Mayo County Council Road Traffic Special Speed Limits Bye-Laws Blacksod Bay Quiet Roads Scheme”, to the Mayo National Roads Office, Glenpark House, The Mall, Castlebar, F23 XF40.
