Site donor representative says it would make no sense to buy a site for new fire station

The Billy Kedian Trust has donated part of a six acre site for the development of a new fire station in Ballyhaunis
A site has been offered as a donation to Mayo County Council to locate the recently announced new Ballyhaunis fire station.
The Billy Kedian Trust has donated part of a six acre site for the development of a new fire station in Ballyhaunis.
Speaking to The Mayo News, Gerry O’Boyle of the Billy Kedian Trust said when Mayo County Council received funding for a new fire station, he had an idea.
“They were looking at various sites within the three kilometre radius of Ballyhaunis town. We are 1.4 kilometres away from town.
“We said if they build the fire station, we’ll donate the site to them. It will help us in future for further development which we have planned for, including trial rooms and treatment rooms,” he added.
O’Boyle further stated that having both the fire station and a helipad as part of The Kedian Trust will work hand in hand.
“It does not make sense having a fire station on one side of town and a helicopter pad on the other.”
Furthermore, Gerry said he feels it is not necessary to use taxpayers’ money in purchasing a site.
“It makes no sense to buy a site at a couple of hundred of thousand using taxpayers money when there’s a site here for them,” he added.
Speaking on development works associated with Ballyhaunis Fire Station, Gerry said he hopes it doesn’t turn into a situation like "the national children’s hospital, where it went three times over the budget”
