Tom Tracey, from Killawalla, whose family and friends will take part in a Walk for Parkinson’s in his memory this April 11.
A fundraising walk in memory of a much-loved Killawalla man who passed away last year is set to take place this weekend, with proceeds going towards supporting Parkinson’s services in Mayo.
Tom Tracey, a well-known figure in the local community, died on Christmas Day 2025 at the age of 72 following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. In his memory, family members and friends will take part in the annual Walk for Parkinson’s on April 11 at various locations.
The initiative is being organised by Tom’s son, Liam Tracey, who has invited the public to support the fundraiser in aid of Parkinson’s Mayo, a group that provided significant support to Tom throughout his illness.
“Parkinson’s Mayo were incredibly helpful to Tom throughout his journey and his family and friends are forever grateful,” Liam said. “If you are able to contribute to this great cause, please do so.”
The walk forms part of ongoing efforts by the Tracey family to honour Tom’s memory while raising awareness and funds for services supporting those living with Parkinson’s.
Tom was widely known across the region, having worked for three decades as a porter at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar. He was also deeply involved in community life in Killawalla and the wider Burriscarra parish, contributing to local publications and serving for many years as a notes correspondent with The Mayo News.

His passing last December prompted an outpouring of grief, with large crowds attending his reposing and funeral Mass at St Patrick’s Church in Killawalla. Tributes highlighted his kindness, dedication to community life, and the care he showed to others both in his professional and personal life.
Organisers of the Walk for Parkinson’s say the event is not only a fundraiser but also an opportunity to remember Tom and support others facing similar challenges.
Donations can be made through the online fundraising page, with supporters also encouraged to share the initiative to help raise awareness.
