A major technological milestone has been achieved off the coast of Co. Mayo, with Ireland’s first mobile video call via satellite successfully completed using a standard smartphone.
The call was made from an area with no mobile coverage on Clare Island by Vodafone engineer Robert Ivers to Sabrina Casalta, CEO of Vodafone Ireland, who was in Dublin.
The breakthrough demonstrates how satellite technology could transform connectivity in rural and remote parts of Ireland, including many areas across Mayo that currently experience poor or no mobile coverage.
Vodafone said the development could help close coverage gaps, improve network resilience and ensure people can stay connected even in isolated locations. Unlike traditional satellite phones, which are often bulky and expensive, the new technology allows ordinary smartphones to connect directly to satellites for calls and internet access.
The test was carried out in partnership with Satellite Connect Europe, using a satellite network operated by AST SpaceMobile.
The announcement coincides with a visit to Ireland by Vodafone Group CEO Margherita Della Valle, marking 25 years of the company operating in the country.

The achievement was also welcomed by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, as a demonstration of how innovation can strengthen connectivity and support emergency services.
Vodafone said it is continuing to develop the technology and engage with regulators, with the aim of bringing satellite connectivity services to customers in the future.
For rural areas like Clare Island and wider Mayo, the advancement could mark a significant step towards eliminating mobile blackspots and ensuring reliable communication regardless of location.
