There were 20 road fatalities in Mayo in 2024, making it the second-highest county in Ireland for road deaths, according to figures released by the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau.
Mayo was among four counties that accounted for almost half of all road fatalities nationwide last year. Dublin recorded the highest number with 23 deaths, followed by Mayo with 20, Cork with 19, and Donegal with 17.

The concerning figures for Mayo come as part of a national report showing 176 people died on Irish roads in 2024, representing a 4% decrease from the 183 fatalities recorded in 2023. However, the overall death toll remained more than 10% above the five-year average.
Nationally, young drivers and elderly pedestrians were disproportionately affected. The 16-25 age group saw a significant increase of 10 fatalities compared to 2023, rising from 46 to 49 deaths, making it one of the two highest-risk age groups alongside those aged 75 and over.

Driver deaths increased by five compared to the previous year, reaching 72 fatalities, while pedal cyclist deaths rose by three to 12 - the highest level in over five years. Passenger deaths remained in line with 2023 figures but have more than doubled since 2019.
Motorcyclist fatalities decreased to their lowest level since 2020, with 19 deaths recorded in 2024 compared to 27 in 2023.
The data reveals that 70% of fatalities occurred on rural roads, with July marking the deadliest month with 21 deaths. Vulnerable road users - including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists - accounted for 40% of all fatalities.
The figures are based on data from the PULSE and Fixed Charge Penalty System databases as of 14th January 2025.
