Application for first large-scale affordable housing development in Mayo welcomed by Minister Dillon

Mayo’s first large-scale affordable housing project has taken a major step forward, with a 35-unit application now submitted to the Department of Housing under the Affordable Purchase Fund. The proposed Heather View development in Snugboro, Castlebar is being hailed as a long-awaited boost for local families priced out of the housing market.

Minister of State Alan Dillon has confirmed the submission and described it as a “significant milestone for Mayo,” noting the importance of securing progress on key housing projects following the publication of the Government's housing plan last month.

Minister Dillon said these homes, priced between €260,000 and €300,000, will offer reduced, below-market options for first-time buyers and those who have been locked out of home ownership. The development proposes a mix of high-quality homes designed to meet varied local needs:

* Mid Terrace Houses (2-bed): 4 units

* End Terrace Houses (2-bed): 6 units

* Mid Terrace Houses (3-bed): 8 units

* End Terrace Houses (3-bed): 11 units

* Semi-Detached Houses (3-bed): 6 units

Minister Dillon said: “This is a major and long-overdue boost for Castlebar and for Mayo. For some time, I have consistently pressed the case that Mayo needs to be front and centre when it comes to affordable housing. Securing the submission of this application  marks real progress and I am delighted to see this significant step now taken.

“Young families and couples have been calling for affordable options for years, this project begins to answer that call.”

Minister Dillon added: “Affordable housing is not just a Government commitment, it is a policy I have actively driven for Mayo at national level. These homes, priced well below market rates, will give hardworking people a fair and achievable path to home ownership. Too many have been caught between not qualifying for social housing and not being able to afford private prices, this development will finally help bridge that gap.

‘Increasing the supply of affordable homes strengthens local services, supports employers, and provides the stability that families deserve. This is about building communities in Castlebar and across Mayo, not just constructing homes.”
