A Space of Our Own Club has been selected as the community beneficiary of this year’s Ballinrobe Christmas Tractor Parade, organisers confirmed. As part of the event, a Sensory-Friendly “No Beeping” Street will be introduced, running from Biggins Corner to The Valk. The enclosed quiet zone will offer a more comfortable viewing area for children and adults who are sensitive to loud noise, including those with Autism and individuals who wear hearing aids.
The parade weekend will also coincide with the club’s first fundraiser and information event. A large Christmas Market and Santa Experience will be held on Saturday, November 29, from 11 am to 4:30 pm at the Ballinrobe Racecourse. Organisers say the event features more than 100 stalls, festive activities, and a visit from Santa.
A Space of Our Own Club, a parent-led initiative that supports children with additional needs and their families, has grown significantly since its formation. Established by a small group of families seeking a social and play environment suited to their children, it now draws families from across Mayo. The club operates every weekend, offering a relaxed, judgment-free space designed to support individual sensory and regulation needs.
Located on the grounds of the Ballinrobe community play-school and Sensory Garden, adjacent to the Parish Centre, the facility includes a renovated sensory hall, open play area, parents’ meeting room, and an enclosed sensory courtyard garden. The club also hopes to welcome local schools with additional needs classes for social visits and serving as a safe space for families during power outages.
The initiative is supported through partnerships with Tacú Family Resource Centre, Ballinrobe, Fr. Denis Carney, and the Parish Council.
Organisers and families involved with A Space of Our Own Club say they hope the visibility during the parade weekend will raise awareness about the need for inclusive community spaces.
