Mayo TD compares nominaton system to 'hollow democracy of Communist China'

Aontú TD Paul Lawless spoke in the wake of comments from Councillor Damien Ryan at the Swinford-Claremorris Municipal District Meeting.

Mayo TD Paul Lawless has responded to comments made regarding the spoiling of votes by Aontú members in the Presidential Election, including one labelling it a 'slur on democracy'.

At the most recent Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District Meeting, the topic of spoiling votes in the October 24 Presidential Election between Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphries was touched on first by Councillor Patsy O'Brien and Councillor Damien Ryan.

A total of 6,311 people in Mayo spoiled their vote, and among those was Aontú TD Paul Lawless. The other Aontu TD, and party leader Peadar Toibín, also spoiled his vote, stating, “I had no way to exercise a political choice and I wanted to protest that.”

Cllr O'Brien was first to broach the subject.

“Can I ask the question, when the next general election comes, will those people ask the people to spoil their vote? I don't think they will. I think it's incredible.

“I certainly wouldn't have anything to do with it, shame on those people who would say that.”

Cllr Damien Ryan reiterated the musings of his fellow Councillor.

“Too many people lost their lives for the ability and the right to vote, and to go out and to spoil your vote is a slur on democracy."

Now, Deputy Lawless has offered his perspective on the issue, which has caused plenty of conversation.

"It is baffling to me that instead of reflecting on the record levels of spoiled votes and no-shows in this presidential election, some in the political establishment have chosen to wag their fingers at the public and those of us who, like much of the public, voted according to our dismay of the establishment handling of the presidential mess," Lawless stated.
"The arrogance of criticising the people for exercising their democratic right to protest through the ballot box is astounding. To lecture voters about democracy while ignoring the clear signal they sent is the very definition of being out of touch.
"It is not a 'slur on democracy' to spoil a vote – the real slur is politicians who refuse to hear what the people are saying.
"The FF and FG councillors in Mayo County Council decided to spoil the public's right to vote for another candidate when many independents sought their approval to allow them on the ballot before the election," the statement continued.
"A system where Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael councillors dictate who can or cannot even appear on the ballot is no different to the hollow democracy of Communist China – you can vote for whoever you want, so long as they’ve been approved by the establishment first.
"In Mayo, those councillors played their part in shutting the door on potential candidates, unlike in counties such as Tipperary and Kerry, where local authorities facilitated nominations.
"That refusal to even allow choice is exactly the kind of lack in democracy that the public protested against with spoiled votes and abstentions. Shame on those FF and FG supporting councillors who, even now, neglect to recognise the clear message the people sent."
