Minister of State at the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, Alan Dillon TD, has announced that Balla Mart in Mayo will host one of six national Farm Hazardous Waste Collection days this winter. The initiative, delivered in partnership with Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon TD, aims to provide farmers with a safe and convenient outlet to dispose of hazardous waste.
The decision to include Balla Mart reflects its central location and importance as one of Connacht’s largest marts, making it accessible for farm families across the region.
Minister Dillon said, “we’ve listened to farmers, and Balla Mart was my clear choice. Its central location and status as one of Connacht’s busiest marts mean farmers from across Mayo and beyond can access this service conveniently. This is about supporting farm families and ensuring they have practical solutions for hazardous waste disposal.”
He continued, “farmers told us they wanted a local, practical solution, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering. This initiative is about reducing environmental risks while making compliance easier for farm households.”
Minister Dillon also highlighted the broader benefits, “this is not just about waste collection, it’s about protecting water quality, safeguarding human health, and ensuring our farms remain sustainable. By funding this through the Circular Economy Fund, we’re investing in a cleaner, safer future for rural communities.”
He added, "In addition to these six farm collection days, my Department has also funded household hazardous waste collections at eleven other locations nationwide. Similar funding will be provided in 2026 to keep these vital services going.”
Minister Heydon commented, “I encourage farmers across all farm enterprises to avail of this service and to dispose of any hazardous waste which may be on their farms. The removal of such waste ensures compliance with legislation and reduces possible biosecurity, environmental or human health risks.”
The waste collection day will take place at Balla Mart on Wednesday December 3 from 9am until 4pm.
Farmers will pay a fee directly to ENVA, the waste management company, based on the type of waste being disposed of. Costs range from €0.20/kg for waste oil to €6.00/kg for corrosives and aerosols.
