Minister Calleary launches Mayo local economic and community plan

The Mayo Local Economic and Community Plan (LECP) 2025-2030 was launched by the Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht and Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary TD in Ballina Arts Centre on Friday, October 31.

The Mayo LECP 2025-2030 has been developed with the support, collaboration, and participation of the local community, and of key stakeholders from across Mayo. The plan provides a framework to support the economic and community development of the county over the next six years.

It is built on a vision of a Mayo as an inclusive, holistic and regenerative place in which all stakeholders promote our county and enable our communities, enterprises and organisations to be vibrant and resilient.

The plan also sets out six High-Level Goals which have been designed to achieve this vision. This plan reflects the most important community, economic, and environmental needs for the county over the next six years, and that the actions it includes will help make life better for everyone who lives and works in Mayo.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Calleary said: “The development of the Plan represents a clear commitment from Mayo County Council, together with key partners, to lead out on a new strategic roadmap for the next six years. “The planning process has presented a clear vision on how the county should develop, respecting its unique selling points and directing resources towards economic and community development.

“This strategy positions Mayo as an economic driver for the West while promoting the principles of quality of life; the enhancement of an equitable and diverse society, and the safeguarding our natural and built environment.”

Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Sean Carey added: “This plan is a shared vision, one that places people, communities, and businesses at the heart of a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable County Mayo. “It is a roadmap for how we, together, can shape a county that is resilient, innovative, and forward-thinking.”

Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly stated: “This plan represents a significant milestone for the county of Mayo as it will provide a robust and evidence-based framework to guide our economic and community development over the next six years. “The Local Economic and Community Plan is the product of extensive policy research, stakeholder engagement, and public consultation.” 

The Mayo LECP 2025-2030 sets out six High-Level Goals which align with and reinforce the cross-cutting priorities of the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The LECP is also closely aligned with the current Mayo County Development Plan 2022-2028 which puts into action the National Planning Framework and the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy at county and local area levels, and the LECP provides a local response to these strategies.
