Uisce Éireann is set to commence a major programme of water mains replacement in Kiltimagh next week, with work on over 1.5 kilometres of aging pipes along the Swinford Road (R320).

To facilitate the works, Mayo County Council has approved a road closure at Attavally, which will be in effect from Monday, 3 November until Monday, 19 January.

In recognition of the Christmas period, the road will temporarily reopen between Monday, 22 December and Monday, 5 January to ease seasonal traffic pressures.

During the closure, traffic in both directions will be diverted via the R321 (Bohola Road) and the N5. Local and emergency access will be maintained throughout the works.

"We acknowledge that these works may cause some disruption while in progress and we thank customers for their patience," Mr Mac Namara said. "The road closure is necessary to ensure the safety of our contractors, road users and the general public while works are underway."

The works, part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, will see 1,521 metres of old cast iron mains replaced with modern piping infrastructure. The upgrade is designed to ensure a more secure and reliable drinking water supply for the East Mayo town while significantly reducing the risk of bursts and operational disruptions.

Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said the investment would deliver lasting benefits for the local community.

"By replacing more than 1.5km of aging cast iron mains with modern pipes, we will safeguard the supply for domestic and non-domestic customers alike and provide a more reliable water supply for the town of Kiltimagh and its communities," he said.

The works are scheduled to begin next week and continue through the winter months until early 2026.

Water Supply Interruptions Possible

Residents in the immediate vicinity may experience short-term interruptions to their water supply during the works. Uisce Éireann has committed to providing customers with a minimum of 48 hours' notice ahead of any planned disruption.

The works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Customers with queries can contact the Uisce Éireann Customer Contact Centre, which operates 24/7 on freephone 1800 278 278. Further information is available at www.water.ie.
