Mayo County Council proudly announces its achievement of ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification, a globally recognized standard that demonstrates best practice in energy management and a strong commitment to sustainability.
At a celebration event on Wednesday, October 22 in Áras an Chontae, Castlebar Cathaoirleach Cllr. Sean Carey commented that: “Achieving ISO 50001 demonstrates Mayo County Council’s commitment to reducing energy use, emissions, and costs while embedding a culture of energy efficiency across all operations. This milestone reflects the dedication of our teams and positions Mayo County Council as a leader in sustainable practices.”
Practical actions such as upgrading heating systems, improving procurement policies, and transitioning to electric outdoor tools, delivering benefits like reduced noise, no fumes, and improved staff experience have helped Mayo County Council reduce its energy use by 5 percent in the first 6 months of 2025 compared to 2024.
ISO 50001 certification aligns with Action 1.3.8 of Mayo County Council’s Climate Action Plan and supports multiple sub-actions under action 1 to ‘Achieve Mayo County Council’s Public Sector targets of 51 percent reduction in energy-related greenhouse gas by 2030.’
As of the most recently published SEAI figures for 2023 Mayo County Council has reduced its CO₂ emissions by 34 percent and shown a 41 percent improvement in energy efficiency since the Baseline.
Kevin Kelly, Chief Executive of Mayo County Council added: “This certification is not just a compliance milestone, it’s a foundation for future progress. The energy team have put in place processes that embed energy efficiency across the organisation. Through improved processes and investment in energy efficiency we will meet and hopefully exceed our 2030 targets.”
