This morning, Wednesday, October 8, Gardaí from the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau (GNCCB) carried out planned searches at two residential properties in a rural area of west Mayo. The operation formed part of an intelligence-led investigation into criminal activity on the Darkweb.
During the course of the operation, a male and a female, both aged in their 30s, were arrested for alleged offences including unlawful use of a computer, contrary to Section 9 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001 and money laundering, contrary to Section 7 of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Offences) Act 2010.
Both were taken to a Garda Station in Mayo, where they are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. A quantity of suspected cannabis herb was seized at the scene, along with a significant volume of electronic exhibits, which will undergo forensic examination. Investigations are ongoing.
