Mayo Island secures funding for a unique art project

Súil - The Loss of the Light was funded by Mayo County Council

The community of Clare Island in Mayo has secured funding from the County Council for a unique art project.

The project is titled Súil - The Loss of the Light. The project will commemorate the 60th year of the decommissioning and the loss of the light of the Clare Island Lighthouse - a poignant moment in history for the island.

Led by artist Clare McLaughlin, the project is rooted in community engagement.

In the week leading up to the event, McLaughlin will live and work on Clare Island, collaborating with residents to shape the walk’s theme and final sculpture.

“This is about listening to the land and the people,” said McLaughlin. “The sculpture is not just an object—it’s a reflection of shared experience.”

Local development manager, Mrs Carroll, expressed her delight at the upcoming project.

“It’s so important that we take the time to commemorate and reflect on our history and heritage — not only to honor the past, but to strengthen our sense of identity and place. This project offers a moment for both residents and visitors to pause, connect, and engage with the island in a meaningful way. It’s about creating something lasting for the community, while also inviting people from across the county and beyond to experience the unique spirit of Clare Island.”
