County Mayo will proudly host an Alzheimer’s Memory Walk event this year as part of the nationwide Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva, taking place on Sunday, September 21, in honour of World Alzheimer’s Day.

The Mayo event will be held at the Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex in Castlebar, inviting families, friends, and the local community to walk in solidarity with the 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland and to remember those who are no longer with us.

Now in its sixth year, the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva is more than just a fundraiser, it’s a celebration of connection, compassion, and community. In 2024, nearly 3,500 walkers nationwide raised over €150,000 to support vital services including Daycare, Support Groups, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Memory Cafés, and the ASI National Helpline.

Local Champion Mary Rowland will lead the Mayo Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, inviting the community to gather at the Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex in Castlebar for a scenic and meaningful walk around Lough Lannagh, beginning at 12 o’clock.

“I, along with the staff at the Mayo Alzheimer Society of Ireland Day Care Centre, am eagerly anticipating our upcoming gathering with friends, supporters, service users, and their families. This event is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with everyone while enjoying a scenic walk around Lough Lannagh and honouring those with dementia throughout Mayo.

"This special day, which coincidentally falls on World Alzheimer’s Day, 2025, gives us a unique chance to raise awareness about all the services we offer here in Mayo.

"A heartfelt thank you to all our supporters in Mayo. I look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday, September 21, at 12 noon at the Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex in Castlebar for a memorable walk around Lough Lannagh. I would encourage everyone who can to register now at www.memorywalk.ie to join me on September 21 at 12 noon at the Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex in Castlebar.”

With nearly 40 events taking place across Ireland, the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva is a powerful reminder of the strength found in the community.
