Three occupants of car were not injured and road reopened in Achill this afternoon

Road to top of Mayo scenic location was closed today after car caught fire

Gardaí closed the road to the popular Achill destination for a short time this afternoon.

The road to the top of Minaun Heights on Achill Island was closed today after a car caught fire.
The incident occurred at approximately 12 noon when a Renault car caught fire close to the top of the hill.
The three female occupants of the car, who were visiting Achill, noticed sparks and smoke coming from the engine as they were driving and managed to escape unharmed. However the car caught fire in the middle of the road.

A unit of the Achill Fire Service was called to the scene to deal with the fire.
Minaun Heights is a very popular location for tourists to the island as it provides panoramic views of Achill. The road to the top of the hill was built in the 1960s and has a steep gradient to the top.
The road was closed but reopened once the car was removed from the scene.
