A stunning and unique piece of public art co-designed by Mayo artist Cathal McCarthy will be unveiled to the public for the first time later this week.

On Thursday, June 5, the art installation, which was created in collaboration with Limerick company Monarú Wood Designers, will be unveiled.

The piece, titled ‘Big Skygazer', is a curved wooden bench spanning thirteen metres, which will allow those in the forestry in Mote Park, County Roscommon, to enjoy the beautiful surrounding woodland.

The forest was one of the many areas which was impacted by Storm Éowyn earlier in 2025, and it is hoped that the artwork will go some way to bringing a renewed sense of beauty to the area.

Ballintubber native Cathal McCarthy is someone who has created many iconic artworks throughout the decades, including the iconic ‘The Player’, which sticks out to anyone passing through Mayo on the N17, as well as the ‘Friendship Tree’ in Castlebar.

Fellow Mayo native Minister Dara Calleary will also be present at the launch.
