The Mayo town of Balla is in line for serious redevelopment, as it has been revealed that major funding has been allocated by the European Union for the regeneration of the town.

The project, titled BLUEPRINT, will aim to redevelop the town just ten minutes from the county town of Castlebar, and the project is estimated to take approximately three and a half years.

As part of the project, the town's public spaces will be revitalised, with walking, cycling, and inclusive access at the core of the revitalisation.

Residents of Balla will be consulted in workshops on how best to reimagine unused and derelict properties, as well as the town's market square.

There will also be a focus on safeguarding heritage, particularly digitally recording and enhancing key landmarks with sustainable, energy-efficient upgrades that honor Balla’s cultural identity.

The news was welcomed by the Minister for State, Alan Dillon.

“This is a huge achievement for Balla and a testament to the hard work and vision of everyone involved," he stated. "It puts Balla on the map as a leader in rural regeneration and sustainable development.

“This project will not only transform Balla but also serve as a blueprint for other small towns across Ireland. It’s about building a better future together."
