The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has today published the Bathing Water Quality in Ireland report for 2024 which shows that water quality at most of Ireland’s bathing waters was of a high standard. 81 percent of bathing sites have 'Excellent’ water quality, while 96 percent meet or exceed the minimum standard of ’Sufficient’.

In Mayo, the picture was equally rosy, with 14 out 15 of Mayo’s listed bathing areas being given the highest rating by the EPA.

The only exception was Carrowmore Beach in Louisburgh. It was classified as achieving 'Sufficient' water quality in 2024 based on the assessment of bacteriological results for the period 2021 to 2024.

Meanwhile, Clare Island had the most restricted swimming days last summer at 18.

The next samples are due to be taken on Mayo beaches at the end of the month, ahead of the bathing water season which runs from June 1 to September 15.
