A Mayo man is encouraging as many people as possible to get their runners on and get walking as part of MS Ireland’s 50-kilometre fitness challenge.

Andy Walsh, a native of Ballinrobe, has been selected by the organisation, who aim to help those with Multiple Sclerosis, as an ambassador for the challenge.

Those who participate will be challenged to walk, jog, or run 50 kilometres over the course of the month of May, all the while raising funds for an important and life-changing cause.

The challenge is seen as a great way to build momentum and awareness in the buildup to World MS Day, which takes place on Friday, May 30.

Mr Walsh was selected as the ambassador of the challenge as he was the top fundraiser for the event in 2024.

The achievement is made all the more impressive given the fact that he himself was diagnosed with MS on March 12, 2020, the very same day that the country was shut down due to COVID-19.

For him, the life he was living five years ago, compared to how he lives at present, are worlds apart.

“When I was first diagnosed, I searched online for examples to show me it may not be as bad as people said, I genuinely found it hard to find someone to base myself on,” Andy said.

“I want the ‘2020 Andy’ to be able to find the ‘2025 Andy’ online and see how he is leading a pretty normal life without restrictions.”

This year, he’ll be aiming to top the charts once more.

“Not only will taking part in this challenge help support the vital services provided by MS Ireland, but from a health viewpoint, it will also really benefit those taking part,” he stated.
