Mayo has recorded a 125 per cent increase in convictions for shoplifting, according to figures from the Central Statistics Offie(CSO).
The figures, which examine the number of shoplifting offences within the county since 2003, show that the figure has gone from 166 to 373, representing an increase of 207.

The figure represents a sizeable increase since the first year the CSO recorded statistics for the offence. Nationally, shoplifting offences have risen almost 140 per cent since 2003.
There has, however, been a ten per cent decrease between 2023 and 2024.
Of the regions included, Mayo recorded the second lowest amount of offences, only trailing West Cork with 144.
According to Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, MEP for Ireland South, this is an issue that needs immediate attention and solutions.
“Retailers are simply fed up with what they see as a revolving door justice system for shoplifters.
“Small shops are tired of people stealing from them and not facing consequences.”
