Three new classrooms have been approved for Inishturk's national school.

St Columba's NS will receive an extension to include one mainstream classroom and two special education teaching rooms under the Additional School Accommodation Scheme.

The school is one of the smallest in the country and had as few as three students in 2011.

Minister Alan Dillon TD has welcomed the news that approval has been given for the extension to the school which is located at Ballyvaum, on Inishturk.

Minister Dillon said: “I want to congratulate principal Anne McLoughlin and the Board of Management on this successful application which will provide much needed accommodation for this school. I want to wish them the best of luck with this project going forward and have no doubt it will be a welcome addition to the school community on the island.”
