The RNLI have warned the people of Mayo to stay safe around the county waterways in advance of Saint Patrick’s weekend.

The group, who provide 24-hour lifeboat services around the coast, lakes, and rivers of the country, are appealing for people to avoid dangerous conditions and avoid unsafe water activities, with a particular focus on the consumption of alcohol or drugs.

The RNLO have also advised people to check the weather and tides in advance, stay away from cliff edges, and always have a reliable way to raise the alarm in the event of an emergency.

“It is important that people continue to keep water safety in mind during the festivities,”  stated Kevin Whitney, the Irish Coast Guard’s Head of Operations.

“Whether you are on the coast or around inland waterways such as canals, take heed of the advice we are giving.”

Those who see someone in difficulty are encouraged to dial 112 and ask for the coastguard.
