A new primary care centre in Ballyhaunis will be operational by early 2026 - more than four years after construction stalled on the project.
Minister for Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary TD, has confirmed that construction is continuing at the facility and will be complete by the end of this year.
Construction stalled in Ballyhaunis Primary Care Center in mid-2021 after the project was no longer economically viable for the developer, Sharpdale Ltd.
The HSE entered negotiations with the developer last year and the project subsequently resumed.
The facility had been left in an incomplete state for over four years and was raised on several occasions by TDs and local politicians.
Minister Calleary said the HSE has confirmed that works on Ballyhaunis Primary Care Centre are expected to be complete in Q4 of 2025, with the centre becoming operational in Q1 2026.
The HSE has said the centre will employ approximately 18 staff and will deliver GP services, public health nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, dental, immunisation, child and family psychology, dietetics, podiatry, home support and visiting integrated care services.
“This is a long-anticipated project and much-desired development for Ballyhaunis, particularly after the long delays that have been experienced in delivering it. I am looking forward to it being completed and opened - the people of Ballyhaunis and surrounds have waited patiently for it and deserve it. It will be a huge addition to the town,” the Minister commented.
Minister Calleary said that the extension to the Ballina Primary Care Centre was ‘nearing completion’. The facility is expected to be handed to the HSE in the next eight weeks and be operational by quarter 4 of this year.
The extension to Ballina Primary Care Centre will increase its overall area from 1,032 square metres to 2,934 square metres and will expand the range of services at the facility.
