The ‘Aqua Guardians’ group from Balla Secondary School at the LEGO League Tournement in Galway

A Mayo secondary school landed a unique accolade when their students scooped the Innovation Project Award at the FIRST LEGO League Submerged tournament in Galway.

The event which was held on Friday, March 7 in the Connacht Hotel in Galway, saw the ‘Aqua Guardians’ group from Balla Secondary School presented with the Innovation Project award.

The group of ten students was rewarded for their skills in robotic games and research projects, with the theme of the research and challenges being the use of LEGO to explore the ocean.

Students from all of the schools were invited to bring their ideas, and the students from the Mayo town were rewarded for their innovative ideas with the prize.

FIRST is an acronym for ‘For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology,’ and The LEGO League aims to inspire young people to understand and shape their world in a more sustainable and inclusive manner.
