Council official says no contract between Mayo County Council and controversial Ballinrobe hotel

Tom Gilligan, Director of Services for Housing, with Mayo County Council, says local authority never had a contract with Railway Inn after council discontinues use of hotel homeless accommodation

Council official says no contract between Mayo County Council and controversial Ballinrobe hotel

The Railway Inn in Ballinrobe is no longer being used by Mayo County Council

A senior county council official has corroborated a statement from a Ballinrobe hotel owner who said he never had a contract with Mayo County Council.

Tom Gilligan, Mayo County Council’s Director of Services, confirmed that the council has no contract with the Railway Inn in Ballinrobe, who has been at the centre of several reports of anti-social behaviour.

The hotel, owned by Ballyglass native Ray Prendergast, was used by Mayo County Council to accommodate people who presented as homeless to the local authority. The council has since ceased using the property after several reported disturbances at the hotel.

Ray Prendergast has denied being responsible for an alleged increase in anti-social behaviour in the area and said the hotel is available for the general public.

“There was never a contract,” Mr Gilligan said in response to a question from Cllr Patsy O’Brien at the monthly meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District.

It was then reported that Roscommon County Council had begun using the property after Mayo County Council discontinued its use. Roscommon County Council have been contacted by Tom Gilligan, Robeen-based councillor Patsy O’Brien and The Mayo News for clarity on the matter.
