A Mayo woman has seen her long-distance swimming efforts pay off, as she received an award at the Irish Long-Distance Swimming Association’s ceremony.

Carol Commons, from Killala, was honoured with the Jimmy Cranney Connacht swimmer award at the sixteenth edition of the event, which was held in The Carrickdale Hotel in Louth.

Carol has had many achievements in the last year, including completing the 21.5-kilometer Fastnet swim in Cork, as well as the 10.5-kilometer Galway Bay swim.

The swimmer, from Kilcummin Swimming Club, has dedicated the last four years to swimming the 34.5-kilometre North Channel between Ireland and Scotland.

While she may not have completed the feat in her two 2024 attempts, 2025 has brought a renewed sense of determination, which was noted by the ILDSA.

Carol was presented her award by Paddy McNamara on behalf of the Blackrock Diving Tower Community, Galway.
